Range

Within vegetable oils, palm oil is the largest of its kind. This oil is derived from the flesh of the palm fruit and contains more saturated fats than other types of oil. Palm oil is widely used for human consumption, from food to cosmetics.

Palm oil is also the most controversial oil. Its versatile applications in both the food and energy sectors have led to large-scale deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia.

In response, various sustainability systems have emerged, such as the ‘Round Table Sustainable Palm Oil’. The RSPO has established internationally accepted criteria for sustainable palm oil production. These criteria ensure a balance between increasing demand and the resulting pressure on flora and fauna. Moreover, the positive developments in producing countries on social and economic fronts also contribute to the sustainability of palm oil production.

Crude palm oil (CPO)

Palm fruits are pressed and degummed.

This process yields crude palm oil. This crude oil is traded with a maximum of 5% free fatty acids (FFA) in the animal feed and biodiesel industries.

Refined palm oil

Crude oil from the palm fruit can be chemically or physically refined.

Impurities are removed from the oil through physical or chemical refining. Refined oil is widely used as a raw material in the food industry or dairy industry.

Palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD)

Palm fatty acid distillate is a by-product from the physical refining of crude palm oil.

PFAD has a free fatty acid content (FFA) between 80% and 95%. PFAD is used as a raw material in the animal feed and oleochemical industries.

Palm fatty acids

Palm fatty acids are a by-product of the chemical refining of crude kernel palm oil.

It is mainly used in the animal feed industry.

Palm oil mill effluent (POME)

When crude palm oil and palm fatty acids are recycled, Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is generated in the wash water.

Due to the sustainability and origin of this by-product, it can be used as bio-oil or even as second-generation biodiesel.
